i have a real post in the works but I’m looking for a little advice/reassurance. Asher has startled, either himself for no reason or by a noise, and starts screaming like he is terrified. For our baby that doesn’t cry and barely fusses it is concerning. He will wake up and do this, not usually a deep sleep. He cries til he can’t breathe and is hard to calm down. It has only happened a few times but is scary nonetheless. Any ideas on why?

google night terrors
I don’t know. He’s awake during them so I’m not sure that they fit the bill
He’s too young for night terrors (they typically don’t appear prior to 8 months), but it sounds like he’s just experiencing a typical startle reflex (you know how sometimes your body “jumps” when you’re falling asleep?) and then reacting to it by being very upset. Do you swaddle him? This prevents the startle reflex.
poor boy! and mommies. cindy lou who had similar “episodes”. it is distressing but in our case it passed after a few weeks and we swaddled her for naps and bedtime and that seemed to help! good luck.
Our son did this and it scared us too. It turned out he had reflux. Lying down flat can be painful. I don’t know if this is only happening when your son is asleep, or just when he’s lying down, but just thought I’d mention it. Could also just be the startle reflex like someone said above. Hope it’s a phase that passes quickly.
